I2UD and the World Bank Sustainable Cities Initiative SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE BALKANS I2UD and Co-Plan (Albania) are undertaking a Social Accountability Municipal Audit in five selected cities in Eastern Europe. The Social Audit aims to increase awareness of social accountability among city stakeholders and to strengthen the integrity of public services. The audit will assess the current social accountability mechanisms in place in the municipalities, as well as explore opportunities to develop new approaches and ICT tools that improve collaborative governance at the city level.

This recent UN-Habitat publication draws on the I2UD’s expertise in sustainable and pro-poor planning. The I2UD team prepared background papers on urban governance and municipal finance. You can download the guide here.

As part of its mission to transfer best practices in urban development, the I2UD has begun sharing brief cases of innovative urban planning programs, taken from our research. Updated weekly, you can find the Good Practice Review here.

I2UD COMPLETES MUNICIPAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS IN BELIZE In July 2014 I2UD completed an 18-month World Bank financed project to support the drafting of municipal development plans for seven municipalities in Belize. An inter-disciplinary team from the Institute supported Local Working Planning Groups (LPWGs) in the municipalities of Belmopan, Benque Viejo del Carmen, Corozal, Dangriga, Orange Walk, Punta Gorda and San Ignacio/Santa Elena to address existing urban conditions as well as future growth. CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION						INTERNATIONAL URBAN AGENDA
I2UD’s Climate Change Adaptation and Resiliency Framework I2UD recently published its operational framework for resiliency that focuses on adapting and lessening the negative impacts of climate change in low-income communities.						I2UD set to attend first global conference in preparation for Habitat III We’re traveling to New York from September 17th – 18th for UN-Habitat’s first Prepatory Committee leading to Habitat III.
I2UD to work on Climate Change Adaptation in Belize Jim Kostaris in discussion with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy to lead research project on alternative resilience strategies.						UCLG’s Launches “Basic Services for All in an Urbanizing World,” Third Global Report on Local Democracy and Decentralization (Gold III) Recently published report highlights the critical role of sub-national governments in basic service provision and the post-2015 development agenda.
Cotonou and Ausha prepare to build their resilience Two African cities prepare their applications to the 100 Resilient Cities Challenge with I2UD. Mona Serageldin to speak on panel discussion at Boston University’s Conference, “The Future is Now: Urban Asia in the 21st Century.” A one-day conference at BU exploring how Asia’s cities are reshaping concepts of urban development.

I2UD Promotes Resilience to Climate Change in Latin America
Research Trip to Condega and Cartagena
Alejandra Mortarini and Carolina Morgan conducted research trips to cities in Nicaragua and Colombia to further their study of urban adaptation to climate change. They met with local partners and met with community members and local officials, putting their research into action. “In both cities, the challenge is not only an environmental one, but an urban planning one: at the core of the problem is the unavailability of affordable urban land, which forces low income groups to settle in the riskiest areas,” says Morgan, in an in-depth piece on their trip.

First National Workshop In Belize Dr Serageldin Presents for UN-Habitat on GCC

In May, an I2UD team led a series of workshops in Belize, facilitating introductory training modules on urban planning as part of ongoing assistance to seven town councils as they each draft Municipal Development Plans.

Dr Mona Serageldin was invited to discuss challenges and priorities for urban development in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council at the Gulf States Regional Office of UN-Habitat workshop in Amman, Jordan last month.

I2UD’s annual Meeting of the Board commenced on May 3^rd 2013 with a dinner at the Harvard Faculty Club and ended with an engaging and successful board business meeting the following day.

I2UD Promotes Urban Planning with the World Bank
MUNICIPAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS IN BELIZE
I2UD is assisting seven cities and towns in Belize develop their first municipal development plans (MDPs) through the World Bank-funded Belize Municipal Development Project. The MDPs aim to build town planning capacity, strengthen municipal revenues, increase citizen participation, and improve disaster risk management. I2UDwill assist local councils draft the MDPs through tailored training modules, joint assessments, and technical support.

In April, Mona Serageldin presented on urban governance at the 3rd Forum of Local and Regional Governments of the Mediterranean. I2UD is also writing a chapter for the forthcoming UCLG report on urban governance.
