February 2011,
Kendra Leith and Linda Shi attended the first two days of the 49th Session of the Commission for Social Development held by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs in New York City from February 9 to 18. As the global financial crisis pushes millions back into poverty and reduces aid from donor countries that face domestic budget crises, the session emphasized the need to renew countries’ commitments to eradicate poverty and to provide social protections for the youth, elderly and disabled. These trends highlight the opportunity for IIUD to address such social protections in its planning, advocacy and public participation work.
