Armagh, Northern Ireland | International Centre for Local and Regional Development (ICLRD)

Government of Ireland, Northern Ireland Executive, International Fund for Ireland, European Government, ongoing

The Institute is a founding partner of ICLRD; our senior staff and research associates are extensively involved in ICLRD action research, the development of case studies, organizing international conferences, training programs and the publication of Borderlands the Journal for Spatial Planning in Ireland. John Driscoll serves as Director of ICLRD.

The ICLRD is a ‘cross-border, cross-campus, cross-disciplinary’ initiative among universities and research centers to:

  • Provide independent joined-up research and policy advice on cross-border and all-island spatial planning and local and regional development;
  • Offer professional education programs for local, regional and national government representatives, officials and local communities;
  • Act as catalyst to bring relevant public and private actors, North and South, together to work on common goals;
  • Assist local governments and communities to translate policy into ‘on the ground’ action; and
  • Promote international cooperation and exchanges.
The ICLRD also brings together policy makers, practitioners and academics through conferences and workshops to address the legacy of back-to-back development in the Irish Border Region and encourage cooperation between local governments and communities within Ireland and Northern Ireland.
