Oriol Monfort- Senior Research Affiliate

Oriol Monfort is a Senior Research Affiliate at I2UD and has over 15 years of international experience in planning and design in the public and private sectors in Europe, the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. He has directed or participated in a wide range of housing, open space, and economic development, and strategic participatory development plans.

He has managed his own firm since 2006, providing technical expertise on urban and regional planning and focusing in urban design schemas and research studies, land regularization and public space and infrastructure projects. He has been actively engaged in national, regional and local development strategies, community-based development projects, large-scale neighborhood regeneration programs and policy reviews. Recent projects include the National Tourism Plan for Belize, the Land Use Development Plan for Ambergris Caye, and the regional plan for Al-Uqair area in KSA.

He brings significant experience at the local government level, after working for many years as a physical planner for a town and at a Metropolitan Planning Council in Spain. Previously, he was the head of the planning department at IDOM in Spain, where he was the team director securing legally binding political approval for several land use plans and bylaws, working actively to protect and rebuild urban areas, revitalizing historic urban fabrics.

He is a board member of the international planning association, “Les Ateliers,” based in Paris, and has been a teacher and jury member in numerous international workshops.
