Dr. Biorn Maybury-Lewis – Senior Research Affiliate

Based in Massachusetts and Florida for the past eleven years, Dr. Maybury-Lewis has been a senior level college administrator, as well as a consultant specializing in overseas development issues. A Latin Americanist by training, he has worked for over ten years in Brazil, six as a university professor. Since 1982, with support from the World Bank, the Ford Foundation, the Inter-American Foundation, Harvard University, the University of Massachusetts, Cultural Survival, the World Scout Bureau, and other foundations and NGOs, he has contributed to projects focusing on institutional development, the strengthening of civil society, human rights, rural and indigenous communities, urban development, environmental issues, and youth movements in the Americas, sub-Saharan Africa, and, most recently, in Russia and Central Asia.

A political scientist, he has extensive research experience in the interiors of Brazil with a focus on development issues, social movements and the strengthening of civil society, and on human and indigenous rights. He has led multi-disciplinary research and training expeditions into remote areas of South America and Africa to learn first hand of the challenges facing rural workers, peasantries, indigenous pastoralists, and foragers. From 1998 to 2009, he worked in increasingly responsible academic administrative positions, rising to the rank of academic dean. In the mid 2000s, he served as executive director of Harvard University’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies.
